@shankieinthefridge Because being proud > being ashamed That is what it boils down to for all people. It is the same reason why you’ll never hear Africans apologize for their role in various slave trades but they will be proud of their nations or tribes

@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 Not how language works
17
@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 No it is not, words change meaning all the time, usually because their common usage changes
15
@fongangamassana6034 That is completely arbitrary. The Arab slave trade for example definitely had ideological component and anti-black characteristics (like them being castrated and generally heavily looked down upon). The only way the west is special is because they traded a lot of slaves in a short period of time. But the general development of society also plays a role here. It was simply far easier to trade over large distances, in slaves or other products. And Europeans themselves were still being enslaved by the Ottomans and other Eastern countries. And if the only thing that sets Europeans apart is their efficiency, then that is hardly something to put them in a different category for. The difference for you now is that the legacy of this western slave trade is stronger because it is more recent. That is all it is, recency bias

Austrians pretending to be victims in ww 2 is quite funny

@ThePresentPast_ Acting like the concept of race didn’t exist before the 1600s or even that it was radically different from what came before is also a bit ridiculous. Ethnic-group specific law codes and privileges existed for centuries before the 1600s in many societies. And it makes sense that as people interacted more with other races that they’d develop a new framework for that. But it isn’t like the concept itself changed much. Where previously it was ethnic or tribal a racial element was just added
10
@shameonyou1681 he recency bias is all there is. The Arab slave trade or the Ottoman slave trade were about huge quantities of people too. Arabs were also incredibly racist and saw themselves as superior to their slaves. And they also still continued after Western Nations abolished slavery. There is no difference except distance and time to your personal history

Yeah and why should be ashamed of being part of the group that dominated for a while. That is just how it goes
7
@KarlSnarks That they would privitize everything if they could was basically their only actual right wing position in the past couple of years. Socially they gave a lot of ground to the left (even if that usually was by doing nothing and not actively participating in the change)
6
@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 No I don’t because you or I can make shit up and can thus be incomprehensible to each other. That is why there are generally agreements upon definitions, and those can change. So when you speak English it is only natural that the American usage if the word “Liberal” influences the way other people use it because the US is the dominant English speaking country. And generally people do not adapt all their definitions to non-native speakers
6
@MarioLanzas. Sure but the Dutch have been relatively recently. And this dynamic is at play in various other countries as well. With the rapidly fading collective memory of the second world war, so will that under-dog feeling. In addition to this this video is fairly one sided and paints a very one sided picture of the Dutch colonial period, not all of which was based on exploitation or bad
4
The older generations have received a more nationalist conservative education and the younger generations are receiving a more guilt focused “left wing” education. Almost like education is a vital means of controlling people and determining their viewpoints
3
@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 Americans will not change their definition of the word liberal, and the person who is most likely to cause a misunderstanding will be you. As long as America is the dominant english speaking and western country culturally we are far more likely to change our meanings to theirs than they are. You can not like it but that is just how it is
3
@Ayatiinka No they shouldn’t be. They should be proud of their moments in the sun (but also remain reasonable, no one likes a delusional patriot)
2
@KarlSnarks They absolutely aren’t anti immigration in practice And also they can be right wing economically and socially liberal left/leaning which they are.
2
Sure, and because they actually just want money and they are afraid that if people think an apology has been made their chances of getting more money will be smaller
2
@NaSaSh1087 Russia is literally at war right now, so if you mean that, no it isn’t exactly the same As for Germany, I would say they can be proud of many elements of their past. But obviously not of their ww2 history. They don’t have to feel guilty for it either, unless if they happen to be one of the last living SS guys. And they were probably worse in those 12 years than most colonial empires
1
@shankieinthefridge he vvd is not right wing socially by any means Which is probably why they cave on social issues to the left wingers in the government. Lest you forget we have multiple parties in government and at least one of them is socially very left wing (d66
1
@NLJeffEU Or any West African country. You are right they are just using it as an opportunity to try and get cash. And Western Nations are weak enough to cave
1
@DenUitvreter The judge based education goes hand in hand with the cultural marxist view of history, which is what people are taught now. However, to imply that older generations weren’t just getting a different selection of historical events as propaganda is equally silly. Education has always been a tool to mold people by. And slavery did actually happen. It isn’t like they aren’t teaching facts now. All that matters is the framing
1
@gabrielsilva-pl3dx fucked by the British yet again
1
For a lot of Indonesians at the time the Dutch Empire was just repalced with an ''Indonesian'' one. With enforced nation building and the annexation of islands and peoples that didn't actually want to be part of Indonesia either
1
@seanlander9321 Yes exactly you can apologize to Indonesians affected by it. But I do think we don’t have to apologize to their government when they are acting so sanctimoniously
1
1
@MyILoveMinecraft Some of you already are
1
@manulad2000 Well Manuel I have seen plenty of them do it. So excuse me if I don’t believe you, manuel
1
@manulad2000 I don’t lol, but the unearned European sense of superiority is still amusing
1
@mistrants2745 They haven’t moved to the right at all though, except when it comes to their election campaigns maybe
1
@manulad2000 And now past glory is all that is left lol
1
@KarlSnarks The vvd is pro gay, pro abortion, pro immigration and they aren’t even anti trans. If they are fucking socially conservative then the words mean nothing. Just because they aren’t cultural marxist doesn’t mean they are conservative
1
@EduardoSilva-yp7ob Why would you apologize for being successful The Africans would have done similar things to us had they been able to do them. I mean they enslaved each other and then sold each other too.
