In France, Clovis often is, which makes no sense. As for Germany, I never met anyone who thinks Charlemagne is their founding father. German tribes existed before him, and were very much not united after him

It does, the French nobility was Frankish, and they sort of laid the foundation for the kingdom of France, they aren’t French though

@Kingedwardiii2003 Well Arminius is more so a heroic figure, but he absolutely isn’t a founding father of Germany. He was killed by his own tribe and replaced by a more pro-roman relative (the son of his brother).

@michaelcooreman3509 Frankish settlement was relatively minor (unlike for example the anglo-Saxons in England). Which is why French has little Frankish influence. Even in Northern France the majority of people would be Latinized gauls. They were of course ruled over by Franks until the Frankish elite assimilated into the Latinized Gaulic people and created a French identity. In essence the early French state was Frankish, and France as a medieval kingdom was shaped in large part by the Franks, but they are not the Franks

That image is from centuries after his death and probably looks nothing like him. He probably had no beard and short hair (to look more like the Roman emperors of old who’s legacy he wanted to claim)

Charlemagne had support from the pope, in Rome. You can argue about what you find more or less legitimate, but ultimately he was seen as the Emperor of Rome in his time

@michaelcooreman3509 Franks also lived in Germany, but German identity is a merger of far more Germanic tribes than just the Franks so their influence is more diluted. In terms of ethnicity and language the Dutch (both in the Netherlands and Belgim) are the most direct descendants of the Franks, particularly the Limburg, Brabant and Utrecht regions

@Thinkaboutit56789 What are you talking about? Germanic is a category we modern peple enforce on ancient tribes that is mostly based on language and religion. As for Germanic tribes, Germans can’t claim to be Frankish simply because they are also Germanic. Saxons, Bavari and Allemani tribes were all distinct from the Franks. Some Germans are Franks but the overwhelming majority of them aren’t. There wasn’t just one Germanic tribe, and German identity developed much later. I also didn’t say the French are Frankish. The modern day descendants of the Franks live in parts of west Germany (mostly along the northern parts of the German rhine), the Netherlands (except for Frisia and the few Saxon regions), Belgium (mainly in Flanders, Brabant and Limburg) and small parts of Northern France That all being said, Charlemagne absolutely wasn’t German, as the first mentions of German identity stem from the early 11th century, long after he lived. It would he like saying Caesar had an Italian identity, he didn’t

He prevented the potential Latinization of the Germanic peoples, but that doesn’t just apply to Germans, it applies to basically all continental west Germanic peoples. By this logic he is also the founding father of the English, as without him they’d also have been latinized

@zaltan1234 It was clearly a Frankish Empire. Charlemagne’s mother tongue was a Frankish language. It isn’t until after the desth of him and his son that the Frankish nobles really start embracing a completely separate proto-French identity

Technically that would be Otto the great, as Charlemagne consider himself just emperor of Rome, and the holy roman empire would come centuries later. The same goes for Otto but in his case there is a direct institutional line from him to the holy roman emperors, which there isn’t for Charlemagne

@reynoldtanto4853 It doesn’t matter who the most legitimate successor is. There is no such thing. It all just depends on your beliefs and what you like more, legitimacy is completely subjective. The point is that Charlemagne was recognized as Emperor of Rome

@j451 But the heartland of the Franks was also in Modern day Germany, so it doesn’t really matter either way. Some west Germans along the Rhine, most of the Dutch and some people in Northern France are the descendants of the Franks
