It absolutely wasn’t big H that started the idea of a single German identity. This is a concept that has been slowly developing since the 11th century. Also, just because someone sees themselves as Hessian first, doesn’t mean that they aren’t a part of a broader cultural group. Certainly after the 15/1600s it was generally understood that you could be Prussian, Bavarian, Saxon or Austrian etc etc and still all be German. Even if there wasn’t a single unified nation-state

@AK-hi7mg You act like they speak a completely incomprehensible language every 50km, they absolutely do not Germans all speak closely related languages (on top of the standardised language of the modern era) and have closely related cultures customs and identities, even before unification. Germany is not a forced or arbitrary construct. For that you can looks at places like Indonesia or India. These nations are actually made up of wildly different groups that before they happened to be conquered by the same country, had little to do with each other or in common.
