As usual, republicans are only concerned with budgets and deficit spending when a democrat is in office. Not a peep from them when Trump was cutting taxes and acting as if $ grew on trees.

@timnelson1787 That goes without saying. But left to their own volition, people will always help themselves to the unearned, especially considering the government's largesse and inefficiency. Plus this is mostly a state and local issue, not a federal government one. Over here in California, corruption is rampant and there are not enough officials overseeing the disbursements taking place.

@timnelson1787 No. You are correct, the whole stimulus program was done in a ham-handed, blunderbuss manner with not enough oversight to prevent fraud. But you do realize that the deficit rose almost $7.8 trillion dollars under Trump, more than all previous administrations combined. And to compound matters, he cut taxes. So when you cut taxes and increase deficit spending, how are we to pay our bills? Where is the $ going to come from? And it's kind of hypocritical of these republicans who want a laissez-faire government to all of a sudden come hat-in-hand looking for relief checks from Uncle Sam and call for more oversight, not to mention getting their covid shots. Lots of hypocrisy going around.

@timnelson1787 No...but they also do not need tax cuts like the ones Trump gave them. Paying your fair share has always been a problem with some republicans.

@timnelson1787 People earning that much usually are sophisticated enough to invest in tax free investments like certain bonds and qualified accounts, etc. They do not need government's help, there are plenty of other legal loopholes they can take advantage of. Plus, you have to understand that our standard of living is higher because our taxes go towards investments that benefit everyone...like roads, highways, schools and other public institutions. None of the infrastructure we have today would be possible without someone paying for it. So the answer to your question is "yes." I do pay a decent amount, but paying higher taxes is all part of a social contract we have.

@timnelson1787 I was a stock broker back in the early aughts, and I saw firsthand how things can run amok when there's little to no government oversight, especially in the banking and investment industries. Government is essential in order to maintain a level playing field and to protect the general welfare and, ironically, ensure our freedoms. And again, I need to point out the sheer chutzpah of people (typically conservatives) who want government out of their business, relying on the free markets when times are good, only to come hat-in-hand to Uncle Sam looking for bailout money from taxpayers in order to save their industry. This happened 13 year ago and is happening once again. If you're so principled, then you should not take any government assistance at the moment like so many shameless republicans are.

@dr.lyleevans6915 I believe it's called The Trickle Down theory, which is bogus in theory and in practice. Big corporations and wealthy individuals usually divert large sums of money to the Cayman Islands to avoid paying taxes in the first place, rather than reinvesting it or hiring more people.
