@bradvp4339 But you have to compare the homicide RATE (i.e. homicides per 100,00 people). In 1991 the homicide rate was ~3.98/100,000, in 2018 it was ~3.55/100,000. The population of Toronto has grown by roughly half a million or 20% since 1991. And 2018 was an exceptionally high year, the average over the past 10 years has been 73 homicides per year. My point is that people who think Toronto has become some murderous hell hole, in contrast to some peaceful imaginary past, are not in touch with reality.

Toronto had a higher homicide rate in 1990 than it does today. Toronto is also safer than many other cities in Canada and routinely ranked among the safest cities in North America.

POLICE. DO. NOT. PREVENT. CRIME. Nor do they address the root causes of crime which is often related to poverty and lack of economic opportunities. If we want to prevent crime , and not flush tax dollars down the toilet, we should invest in social programs, affordable housing, and equitable economic development.

LOL get a grip. Bet you've never been to Jane and Driftwood.

@somebodysomewhere2277 I promise you that among ANY demographic there is some degree of criminal behaviour.

Do you think police prevent crime by harassing teenagers?

These comments demonstrate that many people are very eager to swallow any copaganda and racist right-wing talking points about crime and immigration.

Well maybe the glass of your popemobile was too thick to see that +50,000 people live in that area and generally get along fine. If you look at per capita police data, JaneFinch does not stand out as significantly more dangerous than other Toronto neighbourhoods. There are other areas with more per capita homicides and many areas with more per capita assaults, robberies and autothefts.

GTFOH with that xenophobic shit. You think there were no murders in Canada prior to 1967?

@somebodysomewhere2277 LOL where is crime completely "rampant" in Toronto?

@somebodysomewhere2277 I don't know how you define "rampant" but I don't think JaneFinch would qualify. If you actually look at per capita police data, JaneFinch does not stand out as particularly dangerous among Toronto neighbourhoods. There are other areas with more per capita homicides and many areas with more per capita assaults, robberies and autothefts. But the media latch on to incidents in J&F so that's the only neigbourhood known for crime by people who don't live in Toronto.
