Given that such a natural incentive exists, CA would be smart to create a disincentive to counter an influx from other states.

@kenw4930 those are the only 2 options, huh? Good to know ...
47
@brook_angel nice strawman 👌
46
@markclayton8977 if all the homeless people in the US decide to move to CA because of the great weather, you think that it makes sense for CA to take the burden?
25
Valid points
15
@brook_angel lol, you seriously can't figure it out for yourself? Did either the OP or I say we want them to die elsewhere? -- which is what you posted.
14
@kaimanyu586 in principle, yes, infrastructure is useful. But often the reality can be different. Look up the SGR project in Kenya. Here's 1 article that highlights the pitfalls: "China fines Kenya $10m for defaulting on SGR loans" - The East African

I like the closing shot "... the coffee is not going to make itself" 😂
11
@Confucius_Says... I could be wrong, but as far as I know, projects built in the colonies prior to independence did not end up indebting the newly independent nations. Do you have specific examples?

@thefrogandthescorpion on which cheek is the 'I ❤Elon' tattoo? 😂

If Germany wants to curb Putin they must choose between "being green" & being energy independent. Being green thru reliance on Russian energy is putting a noose around your neck & handing the trapdoor lever control to Putin. In the short term, going independent (using whatever means --coal, nuclear, etc) may put us behind on the climate agenda, but it at least allows for time to work on longterm green solutions that do not rely on Russia. This same principle applies to the western reliance on China for manufacturing. To paraphrase: Capitalism has indeed sold their adversaries the rope with which they will be hanged. It's way past time that western governments wake up to this reality & take action before it's too late.

@brook_angel there was no expectation of you being nice. It was merely a suggestion to enable you to communicate unambiguously. And you seem to lack comprehension skills. I did not say that homeless people should be put "somewhere else". I said quite the opposite: homeless from other states should not be a burden on CA.
5
@iannordin5250 Sri Lanka is a good example of the evidence you seek. Zambia is another.
4
@brook_angel I will repeat this from my last reply, since you obviously didn't grasp it the first time: the homeless from other states should not be a burden on CA

Maybe when they get too big, they should take the Berkshire approach & buy the whole company or a majority stake rather than investing incrementally.

10:09 I was somewhat surprised that TX appears on the list
3
@brook_angel now you're just reaching 🙄 Are you advocating that CA take all the homeless from the rest of the country?
3
@markclayton8977 pity you couldn't have said that to begin with instead of defaulting to adversarial mode.
3
@brook_angel if you toned down the snark, maybe your point would be somewhat discernible.
3
There are a lot of "whoosh!" replies in this thread.😂

@robbay8610 all hail hyperbole, disinformation, & regurgitated reich-wing talking points

A good starting point would be the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) built in Kenya. It was deemed by the World Bank as unviable. But it went ahead at a higher cost per mile than a similar railway in neighboring Ethiopia & Tanzania. The railway was supposed to go from the coast to the Ugandan border. After 2 phases, the project was halted & the remaining leg still relies on the colonial-era narrow gauge rail. Net result is a multi-billion $ debt & a project that loses money. This outcome was evident to the average person prior to the project. Investment projects in Zambia also bear scrutiny.

Depends on the stocks or group of stocks on which you're buying the dip. If it's a diversified fund, then buying the dip is OK. If it's a concentrated fund that was horrendously overpriced to begin with, then a 50% or 70% drop from the high may still be overpriced. Some of the sector funds & tech stocks of the dot com era never recovered & were acquired for pennies on the dollar -- or simply went away. If you bought the dip on those, you would have taken a beating.

@carval51 but, but, but Hunter Biden ... Fking hypocrites.
2
@Lilliz91 oh really? How is the Hunter Biden case different?

@Kingzombiemyanmar Ukraine doesn't want or need ruzzia to colonize it. Imperialism died in the 20th century.
2
@iannordin5250 "small portion"? You mean 1/5th? "In total, Sri Lanka owed Chinese lenders $7.4 billion, or nearly a fifth of public external debt, by end-2022, calculations by the China Africa Research Initiative showed."

@michaeltorrisi7289 finally! Someone with a functioning brain👍

@xystem4701 sounds like a great idea. How do you intend to implement it?

Use a stop. I say that & yet there's many a time I don't use one & then kick myself later.

While that is true, CA needs to figure out a solution to this problem of becoming the homeless capital of the country.
1
While that may be true, it wouldn't hurt to address the issues that are causing companies to leave. Losses of behemoths like Oracle, HP, Schwab are not something to ignore. Those losses are not only costly to the tax coffers, but costly to the employment market. And there is also the danger that a trickle will turn into a flood, at which time it will be too late to fix the problem.
1
@garydavidson6917 I'm curious: what is the state doing to address it? And what were the solutions that were implemented in previous decades?
1
@garydavidson6917 no need to be hostile. I politely asked to expound on what you claimed. However, your defensive response leads me to believe you were just riffing.

California has some of the nation's best farmland, so your cockamamie, home-brewed theory falls flat on its face. Also, CA attracts the best minds from all over the world. More so than most states. So your theory that "the worst people interbred" also gets the door slammed in its face.
1
Surely there something California can do to reverse that?
1
... into a diversified fund like the S&P500

@tedg1609 🎯

@hypotheticalaxolotl the weather is survivable only in CA?
1
@hypotheticalaxolotl I don't recall saying you did. It's a question -- hence the "?" at the end.
