It's to prevent infected persons, especially asymptomatic carriers, from spreading the infection. That is how you reduce transmission & slow down a global pandemic. To demonstrate this, wear a mask & try blowing out a candle. The minor benefit to the mask wearer is it reduces the viral load you may come in contact with. And viral load can determine the severity of the infection. And your "immune system fights off viruses" claim is a joke -- ever heard of HIV? Do you not understand a body's immunity can be overwhelmed by certain viruses? Learn some facts before you open your ignorant yap.

Cowling  "We identified seasonal human coronaviruses, influenza viruses and rhinoviruses in exhaled breath and coughs of children and adults with acute respiratory illness. Surgical face masks significantly reduced detection of influenza virus RNA in respiratory droplets and coronavirus RNA in aerosols, with a trend toward reduced detection of coronavirus RNA in respiratory droplets. Our results indicate that surgical face masks could prevent transmission of human coronaviruses and influenza viruses from symptomatic individuals."

Of course I'm assuming you will be able to understand a scientific paper. Type in the title + 'Nature' in Google & it's right there. Debating you is easier than debating a chimp at the local zoo. Even if handkerchiefs are, for argument's sake, 50% as effective as surgical masks, that's still better than nothing.

You don't do "clinical trials" for such an investigation -- you do randomized tests -- which was detailed in the research. "We screened 3,363 individuals in two study phases, ultimately enrolling 246 individuals who provided exhaled breath samples (Extended Data Fig. 1). Among these 246 participants, 122 (50%) participants were randomized to not wearing a face mask during the first exhaled breath collection and 124 (50%) participants were randomized to wearing a face mask. Overall, 49 (20%) voluntarily provided a second exhaled breath collection of the alternate type."
