I would urge everyone to watch the interview of Dr Stephen Kotkin on Lex Fridman's channel. He lays out a fascinating background on Russia & putin. I've saved it at the top of my Ukraine playlist.

@rawnukles 3.7 million (assuming you are correct) out of a population of 44 million is less than 10% of the country. If every country with such a minority decides it wants independence, the world will collapse. Russia has similar ethnic minorities like the Tartars & Chechens. Is Moscow granting them independence? But on the subject of holding the territory, I would agree that it looks unlikely Ukraine would be able to.

@denyspikalov3602 but how realistic are the Ukrainian demands? I would agree with that line of thinking if they were winning ground or at least preventing Russia from making gains until western weapons arrive. But that is not the case. Already Russia has completely captured luhansk & is turning its attention to donetsk. The Russian scorched earth tactic is working. What happens if, after shelling donetsk & capturing it, they turn west & continue the bite-&-hold strategy?

@kevinwarburton2938 what you are saying is true. But what I was expressing as a doubt, is Ukraine's ability to eject the Russians & hold the territory militarily.
