Before venturing out to Mars, he should build a self-sustaining city in the middle of the Atacama desert, with only the methods & resources that they would use in a Mars colony -- including the methods to get water. It's a hundred times easier because you have air, gravity, no radiation, & the safety that you could easily be rescued.
