The narrative that Ukraine was about to become a NATO member is pure Kremlin horseh1t. The fact that Mearsheimer keeps peddling this nonsense makes him lose all credibility. He ignores the fact that Ukraine was denied membership by a veto from France & Germany in 2008. Furthermore, after the Crimea annexation & separatist war in Donbas, Ukraine became ineligible to join -- NATO does not permit new membership to countries with open territorial disputes. Other Baltic states are members of NATO & are already on Russia's doorstep. And finally, Russia's reaction to Sweden & Finland joining NATO says it all. The Ukraine invasion is a land grab & theft of its newly discovered oil, gas, & mineral resources -- & warm water ports.

@blakebeaton8410 how are they "demonstrably false"? Because you said so? How is aspiration to join NATO & actually fulfilling NATO requirements the same thing? Russia took Crimea & found the response to be acceptable. This invasion was predicated on that outcome. You mistakenly seem to think that Putin is some master strategist who is incapable of committing errors.
