  1. Australia is the "big brother", we are responsible for the welfare of many smaller islands and territories, maybe not strictly politically but definitely morally! Temporary work, safety, environmental concerns,, medical care, etc. Papua New Guinea was partly Australian, but now they are mostly independent, except during crises! Fiji is not as welcoming these days, it depends on the govt! Christmas Island is uniquely beautiful - Detention centres were established there to deter people smugglers from making unsafe and illegal trips to Australia and destroying these peoples lives! Indonesian and Sri Lankan boat people still try to enter Australia! We have a strong security presence all around our coast! The Solomon islands, who helped us in WWII have recently turned to China for help instead - very unfortunate! 😳 Some more Islands may wish for self government but it's not that simple! Many have called out for help with rising seas recently! All islanders rely on us during weather crises and natural events outside their skills - even Indonesia!! Norfolk Island is seriously unique, it was a harsh UK penal colony and then had Polynesian influence and British ship deserters - it's would be very difficult to establish self-rule there - I can understand why they would prefer NZ! We must continue to protect them all, especially from any regional war and exploitation! 👍😥
