  2. 1918 was the same year the patent for aspirin expired. The overdosed patient could have been drowning because the one effect was /is pulmonary oedema. I am not sure if they had access to aspirin in huge doses because the manufacturer was in a war with the arms trade who needed the factory for some other chemicals But it was a contribution to the high mortality rate. They were given a 1000 mg every 3 hours and didn't have any knowledge of overdosing The other thing was they lived-in much closer proximity to each other in those days and the basic hand washing and knowledge hygienic practice Plus simple things like electricity and water supply etc for easy clothes washing machine and even getting a proper diet Think about the early sailors getting scurvy from lack of vitamin C and the Japanese with beri beri from eating only white rice that lacks vit b1.
