  1.  @grievouserror  yes. I remember getting soaked in the 70s but not getting cold in the woolen Jersey. Not very comfortable but who cares if it stops you getting hypothermia in a mountain hike. I would imagine the vikings knew this centuries ago when they used to migrate in the North seas

  2. I have seen an umbrella used to scare off a bear. But yes a brolly is what londonders use and i love to walk the country with an umbrella and Wellington boots
