The Chinese belief of the children taking care of the elderly and the more children they have the better off their pension equivalent The same thing in Africa. We forget about infant mortality So most kids over a few centuries ago never made it past the age of 5 The world was a very very different place Kids were almost expendables Only once they had reached adulthood and aquire a personality were they considered We simply can't imagine how much more brutal life was then. Child labour was very normal Just like the cocoa and coltan in Africa today or the victorians sending children down the mines and into the factory
