I think most people with family like that just try to avoid politics because they know it doesn't end well and they don't want to damage relations more than they already are. But it's not normal and it doesn't feel right. There is always this strange feeling of walking like on eggshells with them. It destroys relations over time. You cannot talk about everything anymore, so you talk less and less and less. Then you visit them less. And one day you even try to avoid to visit them. It's really sad what misinformations doing to family, partners, friends, workmates, community and society.

The US Canada relation is a good example for how divisive Trump and the GOP are. They divide society, people, states, communities, co-workers, friends, even partner and family. It is everything they can do. Destroy destroy destroy. And they seem to enjoy watching and they certainly profit from it. I don't know what it is but sometimes it feels like envy. Like they want everyone to live as miserable as they do.

The way to get someone out of a cult is doubt. Which is why all cults suppress doubt extremly. Don't try to argue you have no chance because these people not using reason but emotions. You can emotionally appeal to them and reach them but not on logic. Seed doubt. Show people contradictions you discovered for yourself. Tell them why you think the things as you do. And explain them how you got there. But don't argue or try to convince them they would see this as a manipulation attempt. Just make them listen about yourself but they have to make the steps themselves.

I think NATO can continue without America. The principle is still sound and all the structures and funding can stay as they are. The member just need to increase military spending to become a large enough threat to Russia, China and potentially even America.

Nice example you found there how misinformation spreads. Maybe it makes some people reconsider their information sources and trust. In the absence of trust or knowledge people believe what they like and don't believe what they don't like. ... in other words they share it because they want it to be true not because it is.
