  2. I think this was combination of two things: 1) Trump genuinely thinks of Putin as his friend or perhaps even "daddy". And Trump was really offended about calling Putin out. 2) Trump's peace deal failed because it was more of surrender and he tried to extort Ukraine with the resource agreement. It failed too and Trump needed a way out to explain away his inability to negotiate.
