  2. 4) Taiwan don't want to be taken over and share the fate of Hong Kong. Same as Ukraine not wanted to be taken over by Russia. Why are the people who actually living there asked last? This election showed what people want. Peace but no takeover. No independence but status-quo. Some relations but no puppet regime from Bejing.

  3. Only because independence declaration would bear such a high risk of a military reaction from China. People want peace understandable. However this is risky still. It is a form of appeasement. Appeasement only encourages. Taiwans only hope is regime change in China which looks more and more likely every year since Chinas problems are mounting.
