Please be careful here those people are not dumb (less intelligent) they are just stupid. You can be intelligent and stupid at the same time. Everyone of us does things you know are a bad idea, or dangerous or unhealthy ... and still do it, often out of emotions or instincts. This is the reason why even educated people doctors, engineers, bussinessmen, etc. can fall into the rabbit hole and support Trump. The same happened in Hitler Germany.

They heared so many conspiracy theories and lies (which change each week) and desperatly trying to make sense out of this. So they weave everything into larger and larger conspiracy theories. They losing the feet below them the connection to reality, logic and reason. Everything which even creates the slightest problem is rejected or is integrated into the conspiracy. Logic disappears and only instinct and emotions remains that's why you cannot argue anymore and why they no longer see inconsistencies. Dietrich Bonhoeffer discovered this 85 years ago in prison for trying to assassinate Hitler while trying to understand where this hatred is coming from and why otherwise educated people fall for it. He called it the "Theory of Stupidity". We only know about it because he was able to smuggle out notes before his execution.

Partly. You need education for two things to get the measures to detect lies (critical thinking) and to enlarge your mental reflection of reality/truth (= knowledge). The more you have the easier you can detect lies. Like a puzzle-game which gets easier the more pieces are already connected. The real bad issue is the lack of Truth in media. Even barely educated people can make decent decissions when confronted with the Truth, the Truth and nothing but the Truth. But Truth in media was sacrified for greed and/or for power. And you need to take care of this first because education takes 15 years to take effect.
