  1. They made studies at universities over years to find out if there is a difference between religious and secular people (atheists) regarding "morality" / behaviour. And they found out people without religion tend to much more "moral" than those with religions. And they found a simple and compelling reason why that is. Religious people are forced to be moral by rules and fear of punishment which makes morality brittle. People without religion are moral because they want to be. They choosen to be. Noone is forcing them they just see it's better this way. And the more often people with religion see they can be amoral without punishment (consequences) the more likely they will break the rules and make a justification up. Like "See I got no punishment so it must be okay". And there is another reason why religion is not necessary for moral behaviour. We have the Rule of Law and Human Rights. It's designed to stay moral although it also uses fear of punishment to enforce it. But contrary to religion the rules are free of interpretation and believe what "god might think/want". And finally morality exists not because we follow some "ideal" of being a "good" person (all subject to interpretation what that might be) but simply because it turns out life is better with it than without it.   2. Reality (The Truth) doesn't care what you think, believe or want. If you go against it you pay. And in extreme cases it can even cost your life to go against it like for example underestimating a storm or thinking a prayer can make it harmeless.
