In the absence of knowledge people believe what they like and don't believe what they don't like. And some newschannels made it their bussiness model to tell them what they want to hear ... true or not true. How do I know? Well they said so themselves e.g. Fox before courts saying "we only doing entertainment noone reasonable informed would ever believe us" ... sadly there is no constant disclaimer of that on Fox.
