It's not really new. The TV-Priests show the same effect. Their supporters know the priest has a yacht, a mansion, an own airplane, etc and they don't care they still donate. I can't tell you why for that we have to ask a psychology-expert.

What we see here is called "Devotion". You can describe it as unconditional and blind following. It overwrites reasoning and logic and makes you only want to get attention from that person by any means necessary so you do almost everything for this person even if its damaging or dangerous for yourself, even the personal life is sometimes offered as you can see in religious motivated attacks. In my opinion the only way to sever this connection is to somehow show the victim that it never will get any attention so the person loses interest. But with reasoning, facts/truth you have no chances to convince those people. You might even make it worse because the person thinks you want to remove the chance for attention by your interference. You might be able to do something on the emotional level but this only works when you have a strong emotional connection to this person or the person to you. And the victim is not willing to sever your connection for the connection with the devoted person. Alternatively you can remove the person who is devoted. Turn off social media, TV. Go to holidays for 10 days or more. Twitter removing Trump in that regard was extremly helpful because people tried to get attention via Twitter and Trump kept the connection alive via Twitter. That's why for Trump the Rallys were extremly important to hold and constantly being on the mainstream media with "bad news" or "outrage" was also helpful for him, as well as Twitter of course. That is how Trump managed to maintain the hold over people and even expanded it. It's ironic, but by reporting news about Trumps newest mistakes, behaviour and whatever the mainstream news actually helped him without realizing. There is a saying: People who desperatly seek attention are best be ignored.

Not really. They support whatever Trump says. If Trump would have said: Put on a mask, Covid is coming. Or Please take the vaccine. Or: We should really end the unfair voting we have and make elections fair and equal for all people ... people would support him and do it. The person who is devoted is the key and what this person wants because in their eyes the person can do no wrong.
