Hardly any other topic divides society as much as this. It's even more effective than racism. Of course they are obsessed with it. They don't really care about it and some are probably privately themselves part of this community without telling anyone (Hypocrites) but it's perfect to make even moderate persons picking a side and divide society with this. And that's the point of this. They want people to pick a side here, even people who didn't really mind either side and were neutral on this ("everyone should decide for him/herself") are forced to pick a side. And for some who normally would prefer to stay neutral on this or simply being not intrested about this debate might have issues standing on the side of pro ... but really feel a little uncomfortable on this. Same on the other side. This topic removes the moderate center and divides people.

@gm9460 The Problem is that the Anti-Side tries to implicate that everyone who is Pro-LGBT is automatically LGBT. Which is rubbish of course. But this alone makes a lot of people anti-LGBT although they don't really care and would rather leave the community be and allow everyone his or her self-determination about this. If you are a politican in the US it's even more problematic because of fundamental christianity. Need an example: Show me a Republican who is Pro-LGBT. I'm pretty sure there are Republicans who are LGBT, but not in public because it's by definition impossible. Normally that what we call Hypocrisy. It's one of those topics which forces you to move your position although you would prefer you could stay where you are. And it's actually not a really a political topic but a social a societal one. That's why it's so divise.
