US citizens trust in government is the least among all modern democracies I noticed of all major modern democracies the US has the least trust on the government. People in the US always assume the worst motives from the government. That's why they want to keep their guns, that's why they mistrust any actions concering the wider public even if it's in order to protect people from a pandemic or other threats and that's why they want the government to be small and not involving ("regulating"). In other countries this is totally different. Scandinavia, Taiwan, South-Korea, Japan, Lituania and Germany for example show an implicit trust to what the government is asking the citizens to do. And sometimes this mean even things people may not like but which are necessary. Sure this also has cultural reasons and for sure historical background but the baseline is, the better the government the more trusted it is. And here is where I come back to the US. Because US Citizens have more than enough reason to mistrust the government in the US. They give them constantly reason for this, especially during Republicans presidencies. There is corruption, greed and opportunism in all areas. Member of Congress seem to vote differently than what they say and actually vote even against the public interest. Add to this Insider trade, Bribery ... I mean "Donations" and in-party fighting. And the country is stagnating in the status quo of corporate exploitating not matter of Democrats or Republicans are in power and hardly anything ever changes. So this becomes a self-sustaining cycle. Bad Government -> No Trust -> Less Government -> Even worse government rinse and repeat.
