Trump promise them supremacy and a solution to all problems - him and a return to old glory. And people fell for it. Quite frankly almost everybody can fall for it unless you know what Trump really does. Use the opportunity to grab power but not intending to solve anything. He makes it even worse and that's intended. The more problems there are the more likely they look for him as the person to solve it. Be very very careful here this is important (!): Trumpism does not come from the poor although it sometimes looks like that. Trumpism comes from the middle-class seeing the problems in the country and getting scary they lose what they have (!). I can't point this out enough. The same mistake was done in Europe in the United Kingdom. The middle-class often wealthy enough to provide the private funding for that is fueling this! And it arises from people who have a good life but see the problems and fear losing it! That's why they pick on the foreigners and immigrants. That's why they pick on the poor (if they get worse I get better) because they look for reason. And that's why Trump has an easy game because THEY are wealthy and can pay him to protect them for it ... or so he says. Please don't make the wrong assumptions here, or we are all doomed no matter if you are in America or Europe because the same is developing there as well.

Reading through the comments ... If the politicians have the same conclusions and ideas I read here the battle is already lost. Maybe not in this election but in the next ones. All I read is either discriminating to Trumpists only pushing them further away or trying to solve the symptoms not the problems because the understanding why and where this is coming from is missing or wrong leading to the wrong decission making.

You are scared to lose what you have. Completly understandable. You want what everbody wants, a decent life, not too much worries, good education, safety health for you your family and friends. And the protest are creating even more fear. The horror stories of communism feed to you by the republican party for 70 years makes you think the progressives will disposess your wealth and say goodbye to capitalism ... or at least create unbearable taxes for you. Well I can say it's vastly exaggerated to fear you into voting Republicans since WW2. The Democrats have no plan whatsoever to do that. But they will have to increase the taxes somewhat and for the top 5% of you extremly to stop the problems which creating your fears in the first place. And in return the protest will subside, public spending can be increased to fix the roads, bridges, highways, railways. Modernise the transport and infrastructure and reduce the risk of going bankcrypt when your or your family has a serious health issue. Increase security by properly fund police and fire departments. Increase and expand education potentially even free university for all? Isn't that worth some extra tax when all the anxiety creating issues are gone, you can life your live as you want with a little safty net provided by the state in case something happens to you and the quality of live overall improves?

@MrHeavychevy86 So you decide to not even give them a chance to prove you wrong? And you actively prevent them to change things by voting against them? Do you know what a self-fullfilling prophecy is? When you indirectly lead yourself to the unwanted outcome you expect.

@MrHeavychevy86 There is no Communism it's dead for 30 years. Noone not even China has it anymore or let's say in name only. Socialism is also dead for 30 years. Noone wants it it's a failed model and Europe is laughing what the US call Socialism. Even the most progressive democrat barely registers as something else than a Neo-Liberal (a Centrist). To simplyfy it for you: Even with Demcrats the US is not changing it's core design or it's economy let alone abolish capitalism. This is a lie told to you to fear you into voting Republicans and with that continue the establishment. YES Republicans ARE the establishment.

The problem is that Trump allowed them to live out their racism and anger to the different and their ignorance in public. Before Trump most of their stuff was suppressed by political correctness and society pressure to behave and control yourself. Trump destroyed this barrier by being the same and worse ... as president of the united states. That was so dangerous about Trump. Giving other the impression it's okay to be like that.

Or the Congress (lost seats there as well). But David mentioned this a couple times already.

@RedXlV Thank you for correcting me. However it doesn't change anything. Democrats lost seats in the "House" and in the Senate. Why would they rig one election but not the others?

If the Supreme Court overrule all the lower courts in favor of Trump without reason and true evidence the last days of the US begins. The country will be ripped appart by the consequences of this decission. People will revolt against the judiciary on this overstating their role and staying independent from the executive and legislature. It will be the beginning of the end of the democracy.

@Yonah_144 Give me the source where this is confirmed. A document, a link, a video whatever. But sorry, but I can't take just your word for it. I just want to add here: Unless you find at least 5000 cases (in one state together preferable a swing-state) you will not have the slightest impact in any state yet alone on the hole country.

It's the middle class scared to lose what they have. And seeing the problems and instability in the country no wonder they go into protection mode and believe any snakeoil-salesmen coming along telling them "I will protect you from that" only interested in the power and money it provides without actually solving the reason for the anxiety they have and making it even worse. The irony is, they don't really see this yet, but by supporting Trump they actually make it worse not better. However they will realize this only when it's too late and the problems overwhelm the country. Corona began to show this, BLM protests being violently suppressed by the state is another one of these that's why Trump stopped with this. They almost lost control of the situation and would have been uncovered how dangerous Trump and his men actually are even for normal middle-class citizens.
1
You will never achieve that. The only way is to convince their voters you have a better approach with a future while the Republicans are going into a dead end unsustainable bussiness model from the 20th century.
1
@fromnorway643 Yeah I would agree to that. They should think about proportional voting. This would allow more parties and force consensus among party-wings and parties, coalition governments and such things for more stable legislation and people can choose what they like. The democrats for example could split into social democrats and liberals. The wings are already there.

He can stop talking about Trump but not about Trumpism. This problem will not go away. If it is ignored worse things can happen for example someone more intelligent than Trump but with the same rotten soul.

Green Industry. Green power. Green innovation (Tech/Know-how), potentially Blue and optimally Green Hydrogen, e-Mobility subsidized by government, Infrastructure projects payed by government (High-Speed Rail, Highways, Local Transport) to jumpstart economy and tackle unemployment. Heavy tax increases for 5% of the population to prevent the system from falling apart and closure of Income-Tax loopholes. Closure of corporate tax avoidance. And if Biden is reasonable and a little bit clever: Financial Market regulation and in return government subsidizing of FinTech development and innovation.
1
Well to a degree it is. The people fueling Trumpism come from the wealthy middle-class. They are by definition middle-aged to old. Having a good job, house, property, wealth, kids potentially grandkids, wanting to preserve what they have for them and their family. So you find a lot of Boomers in there still trying to help their children in the future by supporting Trump in the hopes he returns the country back to old times (which will never come back again, but they don't know it yet. Either the country changes or it's doomed to continue to decay).

Consider proportional voting. It can change everything. But it will also help the right side of politics so prepare for new challenges. However it will also allow a complete new menu for voters. Not choosing between 2 but between 5 to 8 parties. So you can in theory vote the progressives in the democrat party directly, or the establisment in the democrat party or the moderate Republicans or the right-wing republicans or Greens, Liberals whatever you prefer. This is like a McDonalds extending his menu from just 2 menus to a hole range. However be warned there might even be a Trump-Party appearing with this.

@antap I notice you were an Aussi some comments below. However I didn't knew that when I wrote this. And yes I know Australia have a PR ... to a degree. Still not quite like in most of Europe but better than the UK that's for sure. And I agree with your assessment. The US is lacking the courage and imagination to change things for the better by going steps which seem radical for them, but worked out well outside the US. And for a sad reason they not often look for examples and experience outside america and consider learning from it.

True. And David mentioned it once or twice recently. Corona turned out to be earth's cure for populism. It does in just 2 months what normally needs years: Proving the lies are lies by hitting home in less than 8 weeks.
