They want to pretend everything is normal and okay. The mask is a constant reminder that things are not normal. First they complain to have to wear mask and everyone wearing one made them angry against the state and thought "those poor people are forced wear them" convinced by media and state. And now that people no longer have to legally but do voluntarily this all falls apart. It destroys their world view on this. All the conspiracy theories around this makes no sense anymore when people do it willingly even if they don't have to.
