I have a little anekdote someone told me once about socialism ... A capitalist and a socialist meet in a train. The capitalist the heading for the 1st class and says to the socialist: "So you want to get rid of the 1st class?" the socialist looks at him and says "No I want to get rid of the 2nd class."

The problem is that people have opinions on things they not really understand. The opinion was created because someone told them to fear but they don't know why or of it's even justified. We need to define and understand different terms and concepts to have any meaningful debate. Capitalism - Market Economy - Planning Economy - Social - Socialism - Socialist - Communist - Communism If you know what these terms are and mean we can make a reasonable debate about what is best for you and best for us.

Having more choice is good. This is what is missing in the US ... more than 2 choices.

He is refering to a concept of Socialism: Sharing the burden of costs for some of your income (aka taxes). But this is only half the issue because how this money is used and distributed is important as well.

"in which the workers control the means of production" -- No I think that's actually communism. The problem is there are roughly 14 flavors of socialism. And this is certainly one of the things close to communism.

Ironically these are for the most part at odds to each other as you can see right now in Germany where both try to work in coalition. And one is constantly disturbing the other.

The lesson bussiness still has to learn is that "social" is good for bussiness long term. But it is hard to calculate because the benefits takes a) time and b) comes indirectly to you by effects coming from society and market not necessarily by paychecks although this is a sideeffect of this. You simply perform better under "social" money wise, stability wise, workforce wise, growth wise. It's a more predicabtable, a more reliable and a more sustainable bussiness model. But it takes time.
