That being said, Mélenchon has always been a huge supporter of the 6th Republic and he made fighting against the "presidential monarchy" a central part of his agenda. During each of his presidential run (2012, 2017, 2022), he's organized "marches for the 6th Republic", gathering around 100,000-130,000 in Paris. So while I also believe the powers of the 5th Republic can be tempting, I think Mélenchon is being honest on this issue. At least, we need someone who openly criticizes and wants to change our rotten political system unlike Macron and Le Pen who love the 5th Republic and its authoritarianism.

@SpiritoftheDragonfly He was the Minister of Economy in François Hollande's government. Our "Parti socialiste" has been a neoliberal party for quite a while now, just like many formerly social democratic parties in Europe (British Labour, German SPD, Italian PD). Our so-called "socialists" propelled him and allowed him to gain power.

@olympia5758 Nah, we need the Commune back.

The Citizens Convention for Climate was a great democratic experiment that came up with ambitious proposals but as always, Macron killed it. Our future constitutional assembly should have a certain number of members being picked at random among the population, like Mélenchon suggests.

@zenxel The media, the billionaires and the boomers wanted him.

@patami2222 Article 49.3 has only led to the fall of one government in 60+ years. It's definitely in favor of the president and executive branch, as other said because the president can threaten to dissolve the National Assembly.

@@Besthinktwice France has been a liberal democracy since 1871.
2
@jorenbaplu5100 He is against the EU's neoliberalism. And why do we need France to be completely silent to Brussel's BS? The EU needs to be deeply reformed if it wants to survive.

@EggandChris The Bourbons of Bhopal (it's a real Indian pretender to the French throne).

The left agrees on the Sixth Republic.

But we don't even have a democracy anymore.
1
@2557carla In reality, it's entirely presidential. The prime minister is only an extra in our political system.

@Zacharoni4085 "Oh no, they don't want to be America's lapdogs, they are definitely Putin's puppets!!" Meanwhile Macron is a puppet of international finance and the oligarchy.
1
There's also blackmail from the president who can dissolve the National Assembly and call for new legislative elections if the deputies threaten to overthrow the government with a no confidence vote.
1
@LeMAD22 Absolutely not. But keep believing that, boomer.
1
No, his first term was just as bad. Remember how he violently repressed the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vests) movement? How he said nothing about police brutality (Steven, Cédric Chouviat, Zineb Redouane)? Privatized many public companies? How his bodyguard went undercover during Labor Day and hit protesters? How he removed the wealth tax? How he spent BILLIONS on private council firms? How he handled the covid crisis? Macron has always been an awful president working for the oligarchy.

@johndoe-cd9vt That's bullshit. We also pay high contributions. And who cares if other countries let their elderly die before they can retire? The US is not a model for us, fight for your rights instead of forcing us to conform with your complete lack of morals and values.
1
@milan431r Economic growth? What economic growth? What about Macron's economic policy of "tax cuts and corporate welfare for the rich"? You guys are r-worded and brainwashed by neoliberalism. A little investments from the government and it's the end of the world. Is that your opinion about Biden's infrastructure's bill too?

@jacobite2353 "MéLenChOn iS aNtiSeMiTiC 🤡"
1
@eoghanwalsh7569 He was never great to begin with. I don't know why you'd think that.
1
@nicolasviard2252 It didn't need this type of reform.
1
@jacobite2353 What the actual hell?? He literally has never said anything close to that. It's honestly disturbing if people propagate this kind of fake news and that you fall for it. What kind of drugs are you smoking in the UK? Jesus Christ, wow...
