@tabletoploft It won't happen under a First-past-the-post system. People should push for a proportional voting system for states's legislatures so that Libertarians and Greens and other political movements could get a representation.

Even violent criminals should be reformed in some way or another after a punitive sentence. Many violent criminals are just released after long jail sentences and unsurprisingly, they are still violent.

You can't defend yourself from cops (see Breonna Taylor's case...)

@Rajaat99 People form a society. Society as a whole needs to prioritize taking care of their close ones and spending less time trying to hit a non-existing jackpot.
2
@Rajaat99 No, I meant the first one which in an ideal world should influence the second one's action. They are a lot of non-violent and non coercive incentives for families and supporting our elders (tax cuts for households, investing in childcare and intergenerational communities, parental leave).
2
Yes, all humans are incredibly violent in nature, right? /s Being born and raised in a dysfunctional family/environment is likely to make you dysfunctional. It's not sorcery or excuses, it's just how socialization works. Personal responsibility is important but looking at the bigger picture to find the right tools to curb violence is also crucial. The majority of the incarcerated population is mentally ill. Maybe we should try and treat them.
2
Well, this approach doesn't seem to work. We should rehabilitate people responsible for petty crime instead of sending them in Crime Universities known as prisons that will destroy their mental health even more.
2
You need better wages and less work hours for that...
1
Pretty sure people won't buy counterfeit menthols if normal cigarettes are still available. And the plan isn't to send menthol smokers in prison, just that the industry needs to stop producing it.

What's the point of a short or long prison sentence if there's no real work done on their behavior and mental health? A violent criminal will stay violent after 1, 2, 5 or 10 years without the adequate monitoring. Every sentence for violent crimes should have a punitive part at first and a rehabilitation component toward the second part of the sentence.
1
I think you are doing a crime by expressing yourself right now therefore you deserve no justice.
1
Mmmmh, so that's why white collar crimes don't lead to prison sentences... To preserve the Republican voting base.
1
Are lockup protestors actually in jail? 2A supporters? Not really.
1
@Ninety Four Moto Well, there are priorities and I think people being jailed for petty and/or non-violent crimes is way more important than hypothetical fines and sentences for protesting lockdown and 2A supporters. Reality vs imagination. I settle for the real fight.

And every one goes blind. Punishment will never bring the dead back to life or erase the pain. Sure, many crimes need a harsh punishment but at the same time, we can't keep millions of people behind bars without trying to rehabilitate them after some time. Our goal should be to reduce crime in a humane manner. We shouldn't act like criminal because we consider ourselves the good guys™.
1
Or maybe we should focus on the most violent crimes instead of wasting prison cells on drug users, shoplifters and so on...
1
@bob.smith117 According to PrisonPolicy dot org (article: Mass Incarceration: The Whole Pie 2020) "Police still make over 1 million drug possession arrests each year, many of which lead to prison sentences." and "There are 6 times as many arrests for drug possession as for drug sales". We need to divert our resources towards the real criminals, not the victims.
1
@bob.smith117 Also, drug use being criminalized for so long made people with addictions afraid of seeking medical help. So this kind of policies actually deters people from stopping... Likewise, the recreational drug industry has gone underground making it even more violent and tied to gangs.

@darthhodges I'm pretty 20% of the richest people don't produce 80% of the output (which kind?). They just have their signature and name at the right place on the right documents. Their little arms and brains don't do anything. Also, countries with low wealth inequality (for example the Nordic countries) have very high tax rates and public spending.

Our attachment to material possessions is pathological.
1
@thisaintitchief5222 LOL, they are at the top.
1
So impopular that one major party embraces that policy while the other claims it doesn't but still does it...
