The North of what? Of Europe? We are richer and we have a duty to help our European brothers and sisters bounce back from this decade long crisis. What we have to gain is stronger markets to export our products to. Poor people don't buy German cars or French perfume...

@tom the cat123 Well, if you like democracy so much, let the Scottish vote again.

Yeah, I think we Europeans are too naive in this regard.

It's not a plan, it's only a term used in geography. The "Blue Banana" is just the nickname for the European megalopolis where most of the industrial, economic and population centers of Europe are located. These cities and countries are connected naturally through trade. It's like BosWash or the Japanese megalopolis.

What? No, it's to integrate them. You can't grow richer without commercial exchanges. To facilitate those, you need infrastructures.

Wake No. The EU already has institutions in which countries have an equal say. For example, the European Council is made up of the head of state/government (PM, President, Chancellor) of each country. So 1 country = 1 representative. Same for the European Commission where each country sends a single member. These two institutions are intergovernmental which is the type of institutions you are talking about. The only institution where bigger countries have a bigger membership is the European Parliament where even small countries have a larger representation per capita than larger countries. The Parliament is therefore a supranational political body. Also, remember that members of the EU Parliament (MEPs) are more divided along party lines than national borders. A Conservative from Germany and one from Spain will seat together whereas a French liberal and a French nationalist won't.

Actually, it's in both cities. It moves back and forth between the two cities.

@ProfezorSnayp The Blue Banana has had a 150 years head start (heart of the Industrial Revolution), that's why it's so much more developed right now. The periphery is getting slowly integrated. It takes longer but we will eventually get there!

Not really. Even if it's outside the EU, we will still trade and exchange with Britain. Just like Switzerland is integrated in the European economy without being a member of the EU.

Also, there is no megalopolis stretching from Spain to Poland...

I'm pretty sure France is still heavily invested in Africa...

It's simple and fun
