But there are honest innocent citizens behind bars because there isn't any trial/scrutiny/checks and balances. I'm not here to judge whether it's bad or not, but people should always remain skeptical. I agree that the gang violence Salvadorans have endured needed a strong response but it's easy to go overboard...

@Spliced-y2k How can they do thousands of background checks in a few days? The police is easily corrupted and abuses its power. You can have a policeman arresting someone he hates for example. There's no real scrutiny/actual trial. I think Salvadorans deserve peace and safety and I'm very happy that violence decreased significantly in your country. That being said, there is no magical solution, every option has downsides. In the case of Bukele's policies, it's unlimited power and arbitrary arrests. That's why it's important to keep some safeguards/checks and balances to mitigate the downsides and abuses. That can be through independent judges, investigation journalists etc. To pretend that there are no problems with Bukele is just as blind as labeling him H*tler.

@c.martinez516 There are some bad guys in the police, like everywhere else, what if a policeman decides to lock you up? I'm not saying that you should release every prisoner but there should be a way to liberate those who are actually innocent.
