@bjornbakker160 Most were killed by diseases but their population should have bounced back since then. It didn't because the rest were enslaved or mercilessly exterminated. The history of the Americas is a shame for all of humanity.

@jryde421 You basically say the same thing than me: racism and economics are tied together. If someone supports a system that disenfranchises and keeps Black people as a lower class, they perpetuate racism. In the end, the Confederacy went through an economic collapse because of the war they started themselves. They could have gotten rid of slavery so that no plantation would have an unfair advantage. They could have asked the federal state to free their slaves against sums of money. There were thousands of options. They chose the worst one because they were scared shitless of losing their status and ending like the white masters in Haiti. The only thing worse than being on the wrong side of history is incompetence. So let's not fool ourselves: racism played a huge role.

You mean: How European powers destroyed a whole continent and their cultures (America), used the wealth to subjugate the rest of the world then acted like nothing happened. We are not guilty of the actions of our ancestors but we have to recognize they have effects on our modern world.

@christosioannides Racism didn't appeared out of nowhere since the dawn of time. It was created and perpetuated through generations. Yes, they lived in a specific era but it doesn't mean we should completely absolve historical figures of the past. Especially since chattel slavery and colonization were controversial since their inception. They had shitty views they inherited from their own ancestors but why are people so adamant to ignore it? I don't blame current Westerners for the mistakes of their ancestors. The current ones are sufficient.

@BM-rw8ty It is not a competition. People are getting aware of British imperialism in Ireland. The Great Famine is (in)famous worldwide. Also the fact that your population is still half the one before it. You shouldn't cast a stone to other nations which suffered just like your ancestors. If the Irish wanted to remove from public spaces the statue or the name of a British occupier who wrote that you were filth/animals/deserved to be exterminated, we would absolutely support you. On the other hand, people know very little about Zimbabwe and Rhodes.

Anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism existed back then too. Because our values are different we should honor different figures. Doctors, philosophers, writers, painters, scientists, mathematicians, workers, builders, soldiers, mothers and fathers, nurses, teachers, not just people who sat on their fat ass while their slaves did all the work. Britain has a lot of inventors and impressive people and they deserve more recognition than Rhodes.

We can't know for sure. We are the product of history but it doesn't mean we can't see the wrongs of the past and their effects on the current world. Recognizing it isn't a sentence. It's not blaming individuals but the systems we all live in. If people of the past took a critical look at their history, they would have abolished many abhorrent practices a long time ago and we would all be better off in the end.

@jryde421 In an American context, supporters of slavery are supporters of racism. It targeted Black people and perpetuated their social inferiority. There's no going around that. Chattel slavery in the Americas is the source of modern racism. The Civil War had obviously economic and political reasons but the fact that Europeans didn't intervene is a clear sign that morality played a huge role. They knew the South couldn't be savalged both militarily AND morally after the Emancipation Proclamation.

But we choose who we honor. Should we honor slave-owners and murderers or scientists, artists and writers? It's not about what we would have done back then but what we do now and how we transmit history.

@Evexified Not to be rude, but you sound like a triggered "SJW" yourself. Nobody is blaming all white people but European powers and their administrations/colonies. Also, we are on very different scales. Britain had around 1 to 1.5 million slaves. And if British people want to remove statues of Mansa Musa in Britain because he had British slaves, well they should. Oh wait. British people don't have statues honoring him and he never enslaved British people.

@gs7828 Again, the pyramids were not built by slaves. And I think the Incas suffered enough through colonization. Machu Pichu is already in ruins.

@gs7828 European colonialism is special because of its absolutely massive scale and the effects it has on the modern world. It's like saying "Nazi Germany did nothing wrong because the Aztecs sacrificed people". Like no, it's not how it works. I can't kill your family and say "other people did too so leave me alone".
