@jokervienna6433 green hide is not tanning but salt curing over years . Unprocessed leather

Australias most strange leather is fish skin leather from Western Australia

I wonder why whip makers don’t use roo skin. Maybe because they’re smaller so you’d need more skins

Loved this video, very interesting

Fun fact about kangaroos If you’re stuck in the outback and need to build shelter. 1 kangaroo tail can make 15 metres of rope if you remove the tendons and tie them together to dry them out Can use to make traps or lash logs together to build

Same Ian, I hate wasting things lol

Do you use green hides or tanned?

@jokervienna6433 you’re welcome. I have a friend who makes whips and does whip cracking shows. He always uses green hides (cows) he cures with salt. He says that the leather is more durable that way

Also green has nothing to do with the colour, it’s to do with never being processed with chemicals

@jokervienna6433 this mans family have a cattle farm. When they kill an animal he takes the hide into a shed and places it on a pile of other hides. Between each hide is a layer of salt. From memory they stay in the pile for two years or so I guess you’d classify it as rawhide

He always called it green hide

Maybe I should start stopping and skinning the roo road kill lol

FYI if you take the sinews from a kangaroo tale , tie them together , you can make 15metres of very strong rope/ lashing
