  3. From Wollongong to port Stephen’s was a part of Fortress Newcastle . Wollongong and Newcastle had steel works and Newcastle was a major port for coal during ww2. Newcastle north of Sydney was bombed by subs and Sydney was always a target from mini subs. That whole part of as coast was a major target by Japanese subs who routinely sunk ships along that coastline.
