  1. Rajoy has a dream : a night-time Police assault on Catalonia and in the morning he stand victorious in Madrid. The reality is Rajoy is a clown. The reality of a Police assault will be an international spectacle of Spanish violence that Spain's minister of propaganda will describe as "Fake news". Spain's options Overwhelming force is much less likely to result in casualties. A full military invasion with Police support armoured vehicles etc discourages any resistance. A small assault or arrest squads would encourage resistance and could lead to shooting. The long term result of military invasion are devastating for Spain. Negotiation is the obvious way out but Madrid's authoritarian mentality won't allow it.
