  1. There has never been a Palestinian state. After the collapse of the Ottomans the land was claimed by Egypt,Syria and Jordan. Imagine (no Balfour , no Israel ) Egypt claim it. Do you think they'd hand it over to the PLO. Like hell. They'd beat, torture and execute anyone rebelling. If Syria had got it they'd be gassing civilians and killing with impunity. I sympathise with Palestinian people. I object to the corruption and dictatorship of Yaser Arafat, the PLO/PA, Hamas etc : non of them are democratic and they are all self-serving, putting their own hold on power ahead of the interests of the Palestinian people.

  2. azur, thanks for that : very informative. Especially how ' the Arab merchants know how to keep track of everyone ' : trade and commerce are the key to understanding history. Ahad Ha'am : at eight years old, he began to teach himself to read Russian. It reminded me of the story Nabokov told about his father realising he couldn't speak Russian (1906). In those times all Russian aristocrats spoke French at home. Anyway, I digress. I hope an amicable solution is found. The West should always back democracy which is sadly lacking on the Palestinian side.

  3. azur, my thoughts exactly (bi-national state) before I continue let me get this off my chest :- The 19th Century saw the collapse of dynasties (Habsburg, Ottoman etc) and the rise of nationalism. Greece had been occupied since 146BC by Romans, Byzantine, Ottoman, then struck for nationhood 1828 Italy broke from the Habsburg 1871 Germany 1871. So how did folk manage for 2000yrs without a nation ? Well if they had freedoms, prosperity and justice they were quite happy. So why don't people settle for those things now ? Well its the zeitgeist of the times : everyone wants to be a nation. Never mind that if Palestine got their wish they'd be a corrupt dictatorship in minutes : all dissent would be punished ( it would be like Putin's Russia). The Quran has explicitly rejected the basis of nationalism. Nationalism is a very Western invention. (Maybe Japan is an exception and China but Africa was tribal not national) Arthur Koestler was a rapist ( he raped Michael Foot's wife) I only add it to blacken his name ( posthumous justice).
