At the Congress of Algecair the French PM ordered capitulation but his ambassador ignored him - then with British support Germany backed down. Also, the German ambassador to Rome told Berlin, "Don't rely on Italy" a) French instinct for capitulation b) Italy unreliable. A Nation's culture is like a personality. French capitulation, Italian unreliability are themes which recur. Russia also has a personality : it was described by Queen Victoria, "The great barbarians, destroyers of liberty and civilisation wherever it exists". Putin's war in Ukraine is a manifestation of Russia's personality.

  2.  @RichardTaylor1630  ....and one could add Louis XIV, who faced a coalition of the whole of Europe and never fought a battle on French soil. However, Louis XIV lost, and left France with a terrible debt, and a terrible inefficient autocratic political system -which led to revolution 1789. Napoleon lost in 1814 (abject abdication) Then lost again in 1815 (Heroic defeat) WW1 was such a catastrophic waste, it is hard to imagine any country emerging with credit.
