  2. Joining compound words happens over time, and is happening all the time to familiar two-word expressions. So the process not going to die out. It's an intermediary stage. When two words start being spoken as if one word, but we're not yet ready to completely join them when writing them, then we use a hyphen for a time. This will keep happening.
