'Land Ownership'. The answer is that the concept of land ownership, which grew out of the need to use fences. With that we get enclosure, and the idea that nature can be owned, (that's it's for us to 'rule'). Human societies that did not have a concept of land ownership existed right up to the colonial days. Indeed, colonialism is just an extension of Enclosure, which is another term for the theft and commodification of the commons (those parts of nature and culture we use). It is also the root of capitalism.
