Just to add to Marcelle's point, the fires are natural and actually essential. Those short stumpy grass trees they walked past require fire for their seed pods to open, which is common for many plants in Australia, and as a result there are always growth spurts after fires. But because the fires are so intense now and so frequent, because of climate change, the habitat is not getting enough time to recover.

Something implied in this segment, (which PBS really should have clarified); is that these are just the ones on the island, there are still many Glossy Blacks on the mainland, they are not only found on Kangaroo Island. This is a subspecies (probably), which has been endangered for some time, it recovered before from low numbers, hopefully they can again.
