It a "telescoping" bolt carrier, similar in concept to the Uzi.

What does any gun at a Swiss auction house have to do with the ATF?

As Ian said, this was made before the Walther MPL.

Deliveries of Ian's book on French rifles is currently scheduled to begin 1st quarter 2020.

Ian explained it: The semi-automatic versions were declared sub machine guns and some were registered, the rest would be surrendered and destroyed.

There will be some open bolt semi-automatic weapons sitting in private collections, no doubt. Though they were never very popular and the registry closed in 1986, not as significant as "illegal" conversions of other firearms in probably larger numbers. Merry Christmas

Yes. They were in common use.

cody sonnet , any sources to that story of a Mauser 1917 sub machine gun? Forgotten Weapons just did a video about the Mauser 1917 "trench carbine" ..

rh 9.3 ,say what again? Ian was clearly not referring to the rivets. He was referring to the front and rear trunnions that keep the barrel in place.
1
rh 9.3 ,thank you for your reply. Many different submachine guns, as well as some rifles and handguns have some sort of forward support for the barrel. You are correct: free float barrels are not particularly necessary in something like this Franchi. Merry Christmas

We can't know if that MG 42 is in full auto or not. Anything can be bought, with enough money and governmental approval.

Johnny Quest is too old for the MPL.
