Comments by "firstandforemost87" (@firstandforemost87) on "More protests against Quebec's Bill 96 as French-language law set to pass in coming days" video.
I’m not learning an entire language because one province on the other side of the country speaks it. I’d be far better served learning one of the myriad other languages I’m now surrounded by in my province, such as Mandarin or Farsi. Ppl in Europe learn English because it’s useful for them to do so. They don’t do it out if courtesy…

@OdinWannaBe “Because Canadian history is French and English” And Canadian present is Mandarin, Punjabi, Farsi, French, and English (among others, probably). Welcome to ‘progressive’ Canada, where your history and culture mean little to nothing.

@OdinWannaBe I get that, and agree, but that sort of thinking is considered regressive and nationalistic today. As you likely already know, only certain shades are entitled to nationalism in Canada today.

@bradcanning875 I spent 5 months in Quebec for a work term. My roommate literally apologized in advance for her bf because he would hate me because of my province of origin. She wasn’t kidding, and it was shocking. He wasn’t the only person I ran into out there who saw things that way either. It was an eye opener.

Why remain a Canadian province then? Honestly, do away w those privileged Anglos then and go your own way, right?

@eaa4773 There is no bridging of differences in a country bent on accumulating more and more differences. Anglophones aren’t even concerned w preserving their own history or culture. Why expect them to be concerned with yours?

Would you call it regressive it a First Nations entity was trying to preserve it’s culture and history?

@eaa4773 Yea. Sounds like Quebec should do their own thing if they think as you do. I’d support that and genuinely wish Quebec the best. No animosity. Relationships between populations change as they do between individuals, and sometimes it’s best to part ways. I’d rather we do it supportively. A ppl going their own way, and on good terms, is something to celebrate imo.

How terribly regressive of you. Progress is the inability to have meaningful discussions w your neighbours. Im Utopia, the government translates for you!

Because communication is pretty important for a well functioning society. I’ve seen thousands of dollars in damage/losses in the workplace occur in a matter of seconds due to communication issues resulting from language issues. Technical communication is thought by some to be that which elevated us to the top of the food chain initially.

Nothing is wrong w it, but it takes a lot of time and effort to learn a language, especially as one gets older, and there’s other things to be learned that will serve a person just as well, if not better, than proficiency in a relatively unused language. Kudos on your language skills tho.

@Ungavaman ?

I have no proficiency in any indigenous language, and they’re much closer to me than Quebec. Not many French Canadians around here anymore anyway, now that the money stopped flowing…

@clairemercer3099 Not in this scenario. Being a minority doesn’t give one a right to any more cultural ‘protection’ than anybody else.
