@osmosis321 It is only sound economic policy if one ignores the price inelasticity of demand for the sorts of carbon sources they are targeting. This is largely a transfer of wealth from those who need to emit to those who don’t, which to me amounts to little more than a vote purchasing scheme.

@osmosis321 Also, if you actually wanted the tax to abate pollution and protect the environment you’d want every cent to go towards giving ppl alternatives, and developing remediation tech (which is still a massive gamble, but better than redistribution amounting to a transfer of consumption). Most cities in this country still have garbage public transit options that aren’t useful to the majority of inhabitants, and roads in cities are so congested that you’re often worse off in your 20 km commute than the rural guy on his 100 km commute. I’ve lived both and can attest to this. Better infrastructure would go a lot farther for the cause than rebates would, but it won’t translate to votes as well due to the time intensity of development. I would actually be okay w this if we were getting alternatives to polluting as a result, but we aren’t and we won’t, near as I can tell.

@osmosis321 What an oversimplification of my statements. Buying a new EV isn’t a reasonable alternative, especially in the current high cost environment. Give your head a shake for such a ridiculous suggestion.
