  2. True Canadian If ppl don’t need tools to protect themselves, then they don’t need police to protect them either. Police show up with guns, and usually too late, because sometimes innocent people find themselves in need of a gun, or at least somebody else with a gun. It really isn’t rocket science.

It more or less just continued along its original trajectory, so it’s disingenuous to attribute this to the gun buyback when there was essentially no change in behaviours or frequency of events. As for Japan, we are talking about a very tight knit and homogenous culture with a strong sense of community and civil responsibility. Apples to oranges comparison. Also, as somebody else already mentioned, these places are both surrounded by ocean, making snuggling harder and more costly. Apples to oranges again. Canada borders the US, which doesn’t require explanation as to how this differentiates us from Japan and Australia with respect to firearms and smuggling. South of the US is Mexico, where strict prohibition does nothing to stop thugs with guns from kicking down doors at night so that they can dismember the inhabitants and string up the remains from overpasses so that everybody can see what happens when the law abiding gunless get in the way of the armed law breakers. And all of this before even broaching the whole rights and freedoms part of the debate.
