I am a black cat AND I BRING THE APOCALYPSE “Only a clueless and privileged white person could think this” Such racism. Tisk tisk.

I’ve been on board with that for a while. Public sector employees like nurses, cops, firefighters, and teachers make a whole lot (plus pension, benefits, etc) considering the numbers pursuing the positions. You see the market at work in the private sector, but the public sector just gets to avoid the whole market forces side of things. Now everybody becoming a cop/nurse/teacher etc is doing it for the $ and not the job.

AnnaDawson Really? Look how many ppl join the military for crappy pay. People WANT to do these jobs. Lots of ppl want something exciting/fast paced/different, and many also want to ‘serve’ w/e that means today. I get what you’re saying, but what would you rather have, a smaller group of cops who are there for the money, or a potentially larger group who are there because they want to ‘serve’ their communities and do good things?

honoraryamerica I forgot about that side of it. It depends where you are, but where I’m from a guy toiling in a shop or on a roofing job somewhere is far more likely to die than a cop, yet we are always told they are so heroic and courageous and deserving of the pay and benefits because hero and danger.

honoraryamerica “If you pay so much to people who ... candidates who are doing it for the right reason” Yup. The number of ppl I know who are becoming teachers for all the wrong reasons... but the pay is great and it’s not hard on the body and you get summers off. Suddenly everybody loves kids... lol.

Liam Keenlyside Based on what? Less educated? Educated in what? Who cares if they have a degree? Police officers need training. If they cost less, then you have more $ for training and recruiting. This isn’t a private sector industry where you have a tangible product and highly meaningful performance metrics. What makes you think that better pay attracts better cops? Does it attract better politicians, or does it attract politicians who will leverage the office for personal gain?
