@steve8803 That is what I did, but even in a rural low cost area of the low cost AB you’re lucky to find a place to rent, and there isn’t much work. This isn’t a matter of young ppl being lazy. We haven’t left them much to work with.

@steve8803 Lived here my whole life. Trust me, there aren’t nearly as many opportunities as you think, and the number of ppl from out East has dropped SUBSTANTIALLY. I’ll tell you the same thing the Oil and Gas guys tell me. If you want a good job in it, you’ll need to get in through friends and family a lot of the time, and the white collar guys I know only think there is a couple of years left in it for them. I live in a small town that runs on 2 things. O&G is one of them, and there are plenty of empty storefronts and struggling hotels due to the lack of industry related traffic through town. Our provincial gov just reinstated the fuel tax because we are expecting to get creamed on energy revenues. Yes. Some ppl got in, and have made a great lives for themselves. Ppl get into finance and make great lives for themselves too, but have fun getting a rejection e mail on an application, let alone an interview. A couple anecdotes from your friends don’t mean a whole lot. I’ll give you an idea of the situation. I was looking for a place to rent. Best option I found was a one bedroom loft above a shop on an acreage for $1,500. Another applicant got it. There were many applicants. Having seen the prices, I realized I’d be better off dumping my savings into a modest purchase. The sellers told me the tenant was ‘good to go’, so I purchased. Met the tenant, and found out he was an old man with nowhere to go. I even appealed to a charitable organization in the area to help him find something, but they said they had given up on helping find ppl places to live. I ended up letting him stay, he remains my tenant, and I have since purchased a second modest place. I actually live here. It isn’t going swimmingly.

@steve8803 Oh, and that 60 something year old tenant of mine had to go back to pipelining recently to make ends meet. He has been working in the industry here longer than I’ve been alive. Immigrated here for it. He’d love to talk your ear off about how it is all falling apart…

@steve8803 YT deleted my first response, so I’ll shorten it. I actually live in O&G country in an O&G town in AB. Lots of boarded up storefronts and closing hotels due to the lack of industry traffic. I only have a tenant because there is nowhere for him to go, and I don’t have it in me to put an old man out on the streets. I actually live here, unlike you. My family works O&G. My friends work O&G. I’ve worked O&G, and I studied energy markets formally. Our gov also reinstated the fuel tax because energy revenues aren’t looking very healthy. Things aren’t going swimmingly. A couple of anecdotes from your East Coast friends mean little to nothing, but here is a recent anecdote from two O&G friends of my own. One is white collar, and one blue. One said he thinks he has two years left of reliable work, and the blue collar one left and went back to carpentry because he read the writing on the wall.

@steve8803 Stop changing the subject, Steve. We weren’t talking about responsibility. We are talking about the fact that the economy young ppl face today is a far cry from that which their parents faced. Why does the topic seem to bother you so much?
