  1. Everybody is so worked up over this, but ask yourselves ‘If I killed 4 innocents while drinking and driving, would I ever leave a prison of guilt and regret?’. I’d probably prefer prison to being out in society... Prison is there to ‘reform’/‘rehab’ as well as punish. If somebody will punish themselves forever, and they aren’t a threat of reoffending, what then is the point in sticking the taxpayer w the bill to house and feed them for decades?

  2. Why? So the taxpayer can feed and house him for 40 years while he remains confined by the prison of his (likely) guilt?

  5.  @chrislim7976  You’re ignoring the part of my argument where I posit that he will possibly (or likely, unless you are a misanthrope) be serving his sentence to his grave, even despite a lack of literal walls. How would you sleep if you were him? What would you see in the mirror? For many, prison would be a mercy when contrasted w ‘freedom’ and facing society.

  8.  @chrislim7976  Calling him my hero presents a “graceful exit”? Are you always this sure of yourself? Where did I put more value in him than the 3 dead children? Where did I attribute value to anybody? All I’ve really said is that somebody in his position will likely be in a prison of their own for their whole lives, and that for many prison could be preferable to facing society. You’ve addressed none of this, and just made stuff up about ‘valuing’ drunk drivers over kids. You know the guy was drunk right, and that he didn’t intentionally hurt anybody? You know what alcohol tends to do? It makes ppl do stupid things they otherwise wouldn’t have done. This isn’t somebody who went out looking to kill somebody. Imagine the guilt you’d feel. What would the point in prison be?

And are those values standardized across the board, and/or are we gonna pretend that whatever values you are referring to are objective measures as opposed to subjective functions of culture? Many would argue that a human life could never be paid back in a human lifetime, if any. Should he go away for infinite years? My point was never that he served ‘enough’ time to pay off his debt, but rather that, depending on circumstances, there may or may not be ‘value’ in prison as a ‘punishment’. Should he serve the ‘full’ sentence? Idk. Why? Because that is the number the courts came up with in that Jurisdiction at that time? The irony here is that you trust the system to accurately assign value (in years and dollars) to human persons and lives, yet you don’t trust it to, on a case by case basis, determine whether or not there is efficacy in further incarceration.
