How much does the extra security cost all the retail outlets (spend a few weeks working security in a downtown liquor store. Have fun fending off the hatchet wielding crackheads that the cops know by name). How much does it cost in law enforcement? How much does it cost us in the courts? These ppl are expensive both inside and outside of a cell. Difference is they are only a threat to property and public safety outside of the cell. Also, that $1K a day is almost certainly a mean average which includes fixed costs. The variable or marginal cost of another person in the system isn’t gonna be $1K. I know a girl who should have been kept locked away after she tried to run over a cop w his own squad car. She didn’t do much time. Got shot at while breaking into a rural property w some others later. Then the system dragged the poor guy who fired the warning shot through the system… I doubt punishing the victims in the courts for having the audacity to defend their family and property from junkies is cheap either.
