The word "Jihaad" (جهاد) in Arabic has a number of meanings:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Fighting in the cause of Allah
Q5: 54. O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islam), Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allah, and never fear of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.
2) Spending one's money and spending one's being
Q4:95. Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home). Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward.
3) Enduring and being patient
Q47:31. And surely, We (Allah) shall try you (believers) till We establish those who strive hard (in response to the divine test) and those who are patient; and We shall put to the test your words and deeds (i.e. to draw the line between the one who is a liar, and the one who is truthful).
4) Opposing firmly
Q9:73. O Prophet (Muhammad)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh against them! Their abode is Hell; and worst indeed is that destination.
5) Showing of obedience to Allah
Q29: 6. And whosoever strives, he strives only for himself. Verily, Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn, and all that exists).
6) Apply the provisions of Sharia (Divine Law)
Q66:9. O Prophet (Muhammad)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them; their abode will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.
7) Imposing forcefully
Q29:8. And We (Allah) have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents; but if they strive to make you join in worship as a partner with Me (Allah) anything of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return and I shall tell you what you used to do.
8) Seeking obedience to Allah in different ways
Q29:69. As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allah’s religion - Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allah is with the Muhsinûn (good doers)."
9) Conveying the divine message through utmost endeavor
Q25: 52. So obey not the disbelievers, but strive against them (by preaching) with the utmost endeavor with it (the Quraan).
10) Dutifulness and care towards one's parents, people
Hadeeth: A man asked the Prophet, 'Can I go on jihad?'
The Prophet asked, 'Are your parents alive?'
The man answered, 'Yes.'
The Prophet said, 'Then strive in (caring for) them.'

Twenty-seven virgins?
----------------------------------
In The Jannah, all females are virgins:
"In them (the two Jannahs granted to a believer in Allaah) maidens with averted glances, undeflowered by man or by jinn before them Believers)."
Virgins that are a grant of Allaah in The Jannah are not confined to those who die in Jihaad (fight in the cause of Allaah):
The Prophet said, "Whenever a woman harms her husband in this world (that is without any due right), his wife among the (Houries in The Jannah) says: 'You must not harm him. May Allaah turn against you! He (Husband) is only a passing guest with you and is about to leave you to come to us".
The Prophet said, "The one who suppresses anger while having the power to give effect to it, will be called out by Allaah, the Exalted, to the forefront of the creatures on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be asked to choose any of the virgins (Houries) of his liking".
Allaah's Messenger said, “The martyr receives six good things from Allaah:
He is forgiven at the first shedding of his blood, he is shown his abode in The Jannah, he is preserved from the punishment in the grave, he is kept safe from the greatest terror, he has placed on his head the crown of honor a ruby of which is better than the world and what it contains, he is married to SEVENTY-TWO WIVES of the maidens with large dark eyes, and is made intercessor for seventy of his relatives.”
1. There seem to be seven things mentioned in this tradition.
2. Cf. Al-Qur'an; 21:103: They will not be grieved by the greatest terror, and the angels will meet them, [saying], "This is your Day which you have been promised".
3. Cf. Al-Qur’an, 56:22: And [for them (martyrs) are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,

"Al-Khwaarij" are the dogs of The Fire
Abu-Saeed said that he had heard the Messenger of Allaah, say, "A group of people will appear among you (Musslims) whose prayer, fasting and deeds will make you think little of your own prayer, fasting and deeds. They will recite The Quraan, but it will not get past their throats, and they will pass through (out of) the deen (religion) like an arrow passes through game. You look at the arrowhead, and you see nothing, and you look at the shaft, and you see nothing, and you look at the flights, and you see nothing. And you are in doubt about the notch."
