  1. I chose to specialise in demography at uni a decade a go - was worried it might be a waste. These trends prove otherwise and just how bad things are. Population change is a consequence of 3 main drivers: Fertility, Mortality and Migration. Depopulation is affected by all of these. TFR is a compound effect of changes to the working styles (more tech, more careerism for women), new social trends (rejection of conventional working styles, polarisation between women and men for politics), location (urbanisation is pushing people to live in much more expensive areas which means they cant afford as much, including families. There are more and obviously more intricate details, but this is just a comment on YT. Migration can never be a sustainable, long term solution 'replacement migration' is a fallacy as most people move for economics - better jobs etc - but then overtime, seek to return to their state of origin. This happened with the UK when upon Brexit, many former migrants like Polish, choice to return as it became clear they could do the same jobs but now in their home country and earn the same, if not more. Or look at Syria - as soon as Assad was overthrown, 1000s of Syria refugees sought to return home as it was no longer wrecked by war. People point fingers at the individuals - buts its lack of forward-looking policies and efforts to prevent economic inequality or imbalanced development between as well as within countries. For too, policies have been reactive, not proactive. We've allowed it to worsen, with some countries becoming so reliant on singular cities - eg London in the UK - that it completely disrupts social dynamics and family planning because people have to move for economics, but then cannot even manage/fund themselves, let alone entire families. The hardest aspect is knowing that we're so far into this trend, how if at all, can we reverse it? Self and bodily autonomy is arguably the biggest symbolism of individual freedom - ie you cant forcibly make people, especially women, have children if they just dont want to. This requires a significant restructuring in our mindsets, but also admittance and willingness by people in power to listen to our needs and wants, and respond appropriately, so that people can feel they have the ability and support to do so. Ok, l got kinda carried away 😆 thanks for coming to my Ted-Talk.
