  5. For anyone donating to help people struggling with poverty I'd like to share some information. When I escaped domestic abuse I needed extra support for a time. This included food banks here in Australia. I meet a family on a good income, struggling with medical costs and debts. They had gone from a two income household to a single income battling life threatening cancer. Another family had an ambulance driver who struggled with a gambling addiction. I couldn't justify buying spices and herbs (full of nutrition benefits as well as flavour) because they were not filling. I couldn't afford fresh produce. I would join the others in the 'food lottery' (I had to drive 45 minutes each way to access the food bank, and could only afford to risk it once per fortnight. It was worth the drive to access the food bank plus get access to big supermarkets and a variety of second hand shops. It was a big day out. The highlight of the fortnight. Finding second hand children's clothes, bulk bargains such as rice, pasta, flour, laundry detergent etc plus the final stop, the food bank. It opened around 2pm, however was sometimes late and I had to get back for a 3pm school pick up.) the charity would get food from the supermarket which was no longer fresh enough to sell. We would get a bag full of stale breads and a few stale sweet bakery treats. We would get a bag full of whatever was available, if we were lucky that day. A punnet of strawberries, with one or two moulding for example. We were all grateful for that. I would get home, remove off parts and create fruit salads, frozen fruit treats, baked goods (flour is cheap, eggs are inexpensive protein), vegetable soups, vegetable stews, etc. So when donating please consider eggs if you can. Please consider spices and herbs. I would also go to 'grow free carts' and leave my homegrown rosemary, parsley and fennel... While picking up whatever I was able. Sometimes it was eggs, or homegrown fruits, lemons etc. My point is small kindnesses can make a big difference. From donating from your garden or 'left over' fresh herbs you may be about to throw out. Laundry mat vouchers are also very helpful, for drying clothes when homeless or in a too small apartment with a large family etc.
